What does the "vitamins” word mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds that can be found in foods. Vitamins are essential for our bodies to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat. Vitamins cannot be produced by the body. They must be acquired from food.

There are two types of vitamins: water soluble and fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily when they are dissolved in water. Some examples include vitamin C,B1 and B2 vitamins (thiamine), B2 and riboflavin, B3 and B6 vitamins (niacin), folic acids, biotin, pantothenic acids, and cholesterol. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver, fatty tissue and kidneys. Vitamin D, E, K and A are some examples.

Vitamins are classified based on their biological activity. There are eight major vitamin groups:

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C is important for nerve function and energy production.
  • D - necessary for healthy bones and teeth.
  • E is needed for good reproduction and vision.
  • K - Required for healthy nerves and muscles.
  • P – vital for building strong bones.
  • Q - Aids digestion and iron absorption
  • R - necessary for making red blood cells.

The recommended daily intake (RDA), of vitamins varies with age, gender and physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, (FDA), sets the RDA value.

For adults 19 years and over, the RDA of vitamin A is 400mg per day. However, pregnant women need 600 micrograms per day because it is important for fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants under one year of age require 700 micrograms per day, but this amount decreases to 500 micrograms per day between 9 months and 12 months of age.

Children between the ages of 1-18 need 800 micrograms per daily for obesity, while children overweight require 1000 micrograms. Children underweight or obese will need 1200 mg per day.

Children aged 4-8 years old who have been diagnosed as having anemia require 2200 micrograms of vitamin C per day.

2000 micrograms daily is required for adults over 50 to maintain their general health. Mothers who are pregnant, nursing, or have a high nutrient need will require 3000 micrograms a day.

1500 micrograms is the recommended daily intake for adults aged 70+, who lose approximately 10% of muscle each year.

Women who are pregnant or nursing need more than the RDA. Pregnant mothers need 4000 micrograms per daily during pregnancy and 2500 after giving birth. Breastfeeding mothers need to consume 5000 micrograms every day when breastmilk has been produced.
